The upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, was first constituted as the ‘Council of States’.
On 3 April 1952, ‘The Council of States’ was constituted in New Delhi.
On 23 August 1954, its Hindi name Rajya Sabha was officially adopted as the Hindi equivalent of the Council of States.
It is called the Upper House because the Rajya Sabha functions as the second chamber of the Indian Parliament, with the Lok Sabha being the Lower House.
On 28 May 2023, the new Parliament of India building was inaugurated in New Delhi.
