Hindi name of the ‘Council of States’ was adopted as the ‘Rajya Sabha’ in Parliament of India.
On 3 April 1952, ‘The Council of States’ was constituted in New Delhi.
On 23August 1954, the Chairman of the Council of States, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishna made an announcement in the Council about the adoption of Hindi name of the Council of States as ‘Rajya Sabha’.
It is called the Upper House because the Rajya Sabha functions as the second chamber of the Indian Parliament, with the Lok Sabha being the Lower House.
On 28 May 2023, the new Parliament of India building was inaugurated in New Delhi.
On 18 September 2023, the Special Session began in the old building, now called Samvidhan Sadan, with a discussion on parliamentary history.
On 19 September 2023, Both Houses moved to the new building and began proceedings there the same day.
