The Sabarmati Express was set on fire near Godhra railway station in Gujarat.

On 27 February 2002, the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express burned near Godhra, Gujarat, killing 59 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya.

About 40-50 others were injured.

TThe Gujarat government and Nanavati-Mehta Commission called it a planned conspiracy.

A special court convicted 31 people; the Gujarat High Court mostly upheld this.

The Banerjee Committee said it was accidental, but courts rejected that and confirmed the conspiracy.
