The Sabarmati Express was set on fire near Godhra railway station in Gujarat.

On 27 February 2002, the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express burned near Godhra, Gujarat, killing 59 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya.

About 40-50 others were injured.

Gujarat government and Nanavati-Mehta Commission identified a premeditated conspiracy by local Muslims in Godhra.

The Banerjee Committee said it was accidental, but courts rejected that and confirmed the conspiracy.

This led to 31 convictions for murder/conspiracy in 2011, largely upheld by Gujarat High Court in 2017 (with death sentences commuted to life).
