South Sudan Independence Day

South Sudan Independence Day is observed annually on 9 July.

The observance commemorates South Sudan's independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, following the overwhelming vote for sovereignty in the 2011 referendum held under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

South Sudan became the 54th independent country in Africa and was admitted as the 193rd member state of the United Nations on 14 July 2011.
