India’s first indigenously built modern steamship, the SS Jala Usha, was launched.

On March 14, 1948, the SS Jala Usha was launched as India’s first indigenously built modern steamship.

The ship was built at the Scindia Shipyard, now known as Hindustan Shipyard Limited.

It was launched by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The SS Jala Usha was an 8,000-ton ocean-going steamship measuring about 415 feet in length and 52 feet in breadth.

It was the first modern ship to be entirely fabricated in independent India, marking the beginning of the country’s modern shipbuilding industry.
