Submarine Day – India

Submarine Day is observed every year on 8 December in India.

It marks the induction of INS Kalvari, India’s first submarine, into the Indian Navy on 8 December 1967.

The Day commemorates the commissioning of this Foxtrot-class submarine, acquired from the Soviet Union, which formally established the Indian Navy’s submarine arm.

INS Kalvari served for nearly 29 years before being decommissioned in 1996, and its induction is rightly regarded as the birth of India’s submarine capability.
