On 9 March 1959, Mattel introduced the first Barbie doll at the New York Toy Fair.

Created by Ruth Handler and named after her daughter Barbara, Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

Handler was inspired by the German Lilli doll in 1956, and development of Barbie began shortly afterward.
