The first motorcycle was patented by German engineer Gottlieb Daimler.

Gottlieb Daimler filed the patent on August 29, 1885, at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin (Deutsches Kaiserliches Patentamt). The patent number was DRP 36423, titled “Gas or Petroleum Engine for Driving Vehicles.”
