The Government of India declared Tamil as a classical language, making it the first language to receive this status.
Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia are six languages in India that have been given the status of classical languages. Tamil was the first language to be given that status. According to Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India, 22 languages are recognized as scheduled languages.
