The Kingdom of England was officially established.

Before 927 CE, England was divided into many small kingdoms like Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria.

King Alfred the Great (871–899) began uniting these kingdoms by defending them from Viking invasions.b  bb

His grandson, King Æthelstan, completed the unification.

In 927 CE, Æthelstan defeated other rulers and became the first King of all England.

This year (927 CE) marks the establishment of the Kingdom of England.

England remained a separate kingdom until 1707, when it joined with Scotland to form Great Britain.
