The Maldives became the first country in the world to ban smoking.

The Maldives has implemented the world’s first enforced generational tobacco ban through the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, effective November 1, 2025.

This law permanently prohibits anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from ever purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products for the rest of their life.
