The Poona Pact was signed between Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.
The Poona Pact was an agreement signed on September 24, 1932, between Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi in Poona (Pune), India.
It resolved a dispute over political representation for the Depressed Classes (now Scheduled Castes) under British rule.
The British Communal Award had proposed separate electorates for the Depressed Classes, but Gandhi opposed this, fearing it would divide Hindu society, and began a fast unto death.
The pact replaced separate electorates with reserved seats (148 in provincial legislatures) within a joint electorate, ensuring representation for the Depressed Classes while maintaining Hindu unity.
It was a key moment in India’s social and political history, influencing the Government of India Act, 1935.
