On November 3rd 1838, ‘The Times of India’ (TOI) was established as ‘The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce’ by Scottish journalist Thomas Allnutt Briscoe and entrepreneur Robert Knight in Bombay, .

it started as a bi-weekly publication before becoming a daily in 1850 and adopting its current name in 1861.
