Madhya Pradesh was officially declared the 'Tiger State of India'.

On 26 June 1995, Madhya Pradesh became known as the Tiger State of India after recording the highest tiger population in the country.

The state earned this recognition by supporting nearly one-sixth of the world's tiger population and a significant share of India's tiger population.

The recognition highlighted Madhya Pradesh's leading role in tiger conservation and the protection of tiger habitats in India.

Home to renowned tiger reserves such as Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna, Satpura, and Sanjay-Dubri, the state remains a major stronghold of the Bengal tiger.

Madhya Pradesh continues to lead India in wild tiger numbers, with 785 tigers recorded in the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation.
