Udham Singh assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

On 13 March 1940, Udham Singh assassinated Michael O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall in London.

Singh shot O’Dwyer twice at point-blank range with a revolver concealed inside a book while he was attending a public meeting.

The act was carried out in retaliation for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, for which Singh held O’Dwyer responsible and had waited 21 years to avenge the tragedy.

After the shooting, he made no attempt to escape and was arrested at the scene.

During his imprisonment, he adopted the name “Ram Mohammad Singh Azad,” symbolizing unity among India’s major religions.

He was later convicted of murder and executed on 31 July 1940 at Pentonville Prison.

In 1974, Udham Singh’s remains were exhumed and repatriated to India.
