West Godavari district was officially formed.

During the Madras Presidency in 1823, districts of Rajahmundry, Masulipatnam (Machilipatnam) and Guntur were created.

It was reorganized in 1859 and split into the Godavari and Krishna districts.

On 15 April 1925, Godavari district was divided into East Godavari and West Godavari districts.

West Godavari District was formed with Bhimavaram as its headquarters, and all of the district offices and regional offices were centralized in Eluru.

On 4 April 2022, after Andhra Pradesh’s state-wide reorganisation, the new West Godavari district was formed with Eluru as its headquarters.
