On 15th January 2001, Wikipedia, a free-content online encyclopedia, was founded in the United States by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger.

Since 2003, it has been hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, an American nonprofit organization funded mainly through reader donations.

Launched initially in English, Wikipedia has grown into a truly global platform and is now available in over 300 languages.
