World Ampersand Day

World Ampersand Day is celebrated annually on September 8th.

It is to honor the quirky and versatile symbol “&,” known as the ampersand.

It was once considered the 27th letter of the English alphabet until the 19th century, when it was removed due to its status as a logogram rather than a true letter.

The Ampersand day Founded in 2015 by Chaz DeSimone, a typographer and designer, through his project AmperArt.com, the day celebrates the ampersand’s aesthetic and functional role in language, design, and culture.

The ampersand, a ligature of the Latin letters “e” and “t” (meaning “and”), has a history dating back to the 1st century AD, with early examples found in Pompeii graffiti.

The name “ampersand” comes from the phrase “and per se and,” slurred over time into “ampersand” by British schoolchildren.
