World Chess Day

World Chess Day, also known as International Chess Day, is observed annually on July 20.

The observance commemorates the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1924 and celebrates chess as one of the world's oldest and most popular strategy board games. It recognizes the game's role in promoting strategic thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, concentration, intellectual development, and lifelong learning.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Chess Day in 2019, recognizing chess as a universal game that fosters education, inclusion, international cooperation, dialogue, solidarity, friendship, cultural exchange, and a culture of peace across nations and communities.

Today, World Chess Day is observed worldwide through chess tournaments, educational programs, school activities, exhibitions, workshops, and community events, inspiring people of all ages to develop analytical skills, decision-making, patience, sportsmanship, logical reasoning, and a lifelong passion for chess, education, and intellectual excellence.
