World Duchenne Awareness Day
World Duchenne Awareness Day is observed annually on September 7th.
It is to raise awareness about Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, rare genetic disorders causing progressive muscle weakness.
Initiated in 2014 by the World Duchenne Organization, the date (7/9) symbolizes the 79 exons in the dystrophin gene, where mutations cause these conditions.
The United Nations officially recognized the day in 2023, marking a milestone for rare disease awareness.
Events include in-person and virtual activities, like those hosted by the Jett Foundation, and campaigns like “Raise your voice for Duchenne” to advocate for better care and treatment access.
