World Kiswahili Language Day

World Kiswahili Language Day is observed annually on 7 July.

It was proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2021, making Kiswahili the first African language to be recognized with an international day by the United Nations system.

The day celebrates the Kiswahili language as a symbol of African identity, cultural heritage, unity, education, and sustainable development, while promoting multilingualism and linguistic diversity.

It is marked through conferences, cultural events, language workshops, educational programmes, literary activities, and initiatives that promote the learning and use of Kiswahili around the world.
