World Listening Day

World Listening Day is observed annually on 18 July.

It promotes the importance of active listening, deep listening, listening to nature, people, and the surrounding soundscape, while encouraging awareness of the acoustic environment, environmental sound, and sound ecology.

The observance was established by the World Listening Project in 2010, inspired by the birthday of Canadian composer, environmentalist, and acoustic ecologist R. Murray Schafer, a pioneer of soundscape studies.

The day is marked through soundwalks, nature listening sessions, field recordings, educational programmes, community events, soundscape exploration, and activities that promote mindful listening, environmental awareness, acoustic ecology, and appreciation of the sounds of the natural and built environment.
