World Population Day

World Population Day is observed annually on 11 July.

It aims to raise awareness about global population issues and their impact on development, sustainability, and human rights.

It was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989.

It was inspired by the global interest generated when the world's population reached 5 billion on 11 July 1987, an event known as Day of Five Billion.

In December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 45/216, decided to continue observing World Population Day annually to enhance awareness of population issues.

The observance highlights issues including family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, reproductive health, and sustainable development.
