Yahoo Messenger was launched.

On 9 March 1998, Yahoo! Pager was launched in the United States as a standalone instant messaging client integrated with Yahoo! Chat.

On 21 June 1999, it was officially rebranded as Yahoo! Messenger.

Early 2000s, Yahoo! Messenger added features such as file transfer, voice chat, webcams, and custom IM windows (IMVironments).

December 2015, a completely redesigned Yahoo! Messenger was launched on mobile and web, introducing animated GIFs, unsend options, and modern messaging features.

On 5 August 2016, Yahoo! discontinued the legacy desktop version of Messenger.

On 17 July 2018, Yahoo! Messenger was officially shut down, ending 20 years of service.
