Yellapragada Subbarow

Yellapragada Subbarow (Yellapragada Subbarao) an Indian American biochemist, educator. A fungus genus has been named ‘Subbaromyces’ in his honour. He developed one of the first cancer chemotherapy, anti cancer drug methotrexate. He discovered the basis for the anthelmintic diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan), which was later recommended by the World Health Organization as a treatment for filariasis. Under Subbarow, Benjamin Duggar made his discovery of the world’s first tetracycline antibiotic, chlortetracycline, in 1945.
