Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to travel to space.

On 3 April 1984, Rakesh Sharma flew aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union (present-day Kazakhstan).

He became the first Indian citizen to reach space.
