The Battle of Saragarhi was fought.

On 12 September 1897, the Battle of Saragarhi was fought during a Pashtun tribal uprising against British colonial control on the North-West Frontier.

Havildar Ishar Singh and 20 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikhs defended the Saragarhi post against a vastly larger force. '

All 21 defenders were killed and posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit.
