The Prasar Bharati Act came into force in India.

On 15 September 1997, the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990 came into force.

The Act established the legal framework for India’s autonomous public service broadcasting system.

On 23 November 1997, Prasar Bharati came into existence, with Doordarshan and All India Radio as its constituent broadcasters.
