World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of May and October.

It aims to raise awareness about the conservation of migratory birds, their habitats, and migration routes.

First launched in 2006, the global campaign promotes international cooperation to protect migratory birds from environmental threats.

History of World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was established in 2006 by the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

The first World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated on 8–9 April 2006. Its inaugural campaign, themed “Migratory Birds Need Our Support Now!”, addressed negative publicity surrounding migratory birds during the global avian influenza (H5N1) outbreak.

The campaign's principal launch event, known as WINGS, took place near Kenya's Great Rift Valley. Another 68 related events were organized worldwide to support the initiative.

Origins of International Migratory Bird Day

International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), a related conservation awareness initiative, originated in the Americas in 1993 through the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. It was subsequently coordinated by Environment for the Americas.

Both campaigns shared the objective of promoting migratory bird conservation through public education, scientific awareness, and international cooperation.

Unification of the Two Campaigns in 2018

On 26 October 2017, Environment for the Americas, CMS, and AEWA announced a partnership to unite International Migratory Bird Day and World Migratory Bird Day.

Beginning in 2018, the combined initiative adopted the name World Migratory Bird Day and established two principal annual observance dates: the second Saturday of May and the second Saturday of October.

The two dates accommodate differences in migration seasons across geographical regions and enable greater international participation.

When Is World Migratory Bird Day Observed?

World Migratory Bird Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of May and October.

The May observance is particularly prominent in the United States and Canada, while the October observance receives greater emphasis in Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Nevertheless, both dates are global observances rather than celebrations restricted to particular countries.

Organizations and communities may arrange additional activities throughout the year according to local bird migration patterns.

Significance of World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day highlights the ecological importance of migratory birds and the necessity of conserving their habitats across international boundaries.

Migratory birds contribute to biodiversity through insect population control, seed dispersal, pollination, and their roles within food webs. Their seasonal movements connect ecosystems across countries and continents.

The campaign promotes awareness of environmental threats, including habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, illegal hunting, and collisions with human-made structures.

It also encourages the conservation of breeding grounds, migration stopover sites, wintering habitats, and major international flyways.

International Cooperation and Bird Conservation

The conservation of migratory birds requires cooperation among countries because many species travel thousands of kilometres across multiple national boundaries.

International conservation agreements, scientific research, habitat restoration, educational programmes, and community participation contribute to protecting these species.

World Migratory Bird Day encourages governments, conservation organizations, researchers, educational institutions, and the public to take collective action.

Birdwatching activities, awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and scientific monitoring programmes help strengthen understanding of migratory birds and their environmental significance.

The observance emphasizes that protecting migratory birds throughout their journeys is essential for maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
