Mahatma Gandhi Begins Fast Against Separate Electorates for the Depressed Classes.

On 20 September 1932, Mahatma Gandhi began a fast unto death in Yeravda Jail against the Communal Award, a British electoral scheme that granted separate electorates to the Depressed Classes.

He argued that this would divide Hindu society.

The fast led to negotiations with B. R. Ambedkar and other leaders, culminating in the Poona Pact on 24 September, which replaced them with joint electorates and reserved seats.
