Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesha Chaturthi – a ten-day Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, beginning on Shukla Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada and concluding on Anant Chaturdashi.

On 14 September 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak helped transform Ganesha Chaturthi into a major public celebration, popularising the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav tradition to unite people, promote nationalist consciousness and strengthen resistance against British colonial rule.

Before this, the festival was largely observed as a private family celebration.
