Sir C. V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect.
On 28 February 1928, C. V. Raman discovered a phenomenon involving the scattering of light (photons), which later came to be known as the Raman Effect.
In 1930, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this remarkable discovery, becoming the first Indian and the first Asian scientist to receive a Nobel Prize in the field of science.
His discovery is so significant that 28 February is celebrated in India every year as National Science Day.
