India’s earliest Indian silent film, Shree Pundalik , was screened in India.

On 18 May 1912, Shree Pundalik was screened at the Coronation Cinematograph in Girgaum, Bombay (now Mumbai), where it ran for about two weeks.

It became the earliest Indian film to be released and was produced and directed by Dadasaheb Torne.

However, it was a 22-minute filmed stage play with processing done in London, so it is not regarded as the first full-length feature film.

On 3 May 1913, Raja Harishchandra was released and is recognized as India’s first full-length silent feature film.

On 14 March 1931, Alam Ara was released as India’s first talking film, introducing synchronized sound.

In 1937, Kisan Kanya was released and became India’s first indigenously made color film.
