National Statistics Day

National Statistics Day is observed annually on 29 June.

It commemorates the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, an Indian statistician and economist who made pioneering contributions to statistical science and economic planning.

The Government of India designated the observance in 2007, and the first National Statistics Day was celebrated on 29 June 2007.

The day aims to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning, policy formulation, and national development.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) organizes the national observance and related activities across the country.

The day is marked through seminars, lectures, workshops, competitions, and educational programmes that promote the use and application of statistics in governance, research, business, and everyday life.
