Potti Sriramulu began a hunger strike in Chennai to demand a separate Andhra state for Telugu-speaking people.
On October 19th 1952, Potti Sriramulu initiated a fast in Chennai (then Madras) at the residence of Manmadha Goud to demand the formation of a separate Andhra state for Telugu-speaking people.
His fast lasted 58 days, ending with his death on December 15, 1952.
This sacrifice intensified the movement, leading to the creation of Andhra State on October 1, 1953, carved out of the Madras Presidency, with Kurnool as its capital.
