British colonial government officially declared Sunday as a weekly holiday for workers in British India.

On 10 June 1890, Sunday was officially recognized as a weekly holiday for mill workers in British India following the efforts of labor leader Narayan Meghaji Lokhande.

The movement also demanded a half-hour midday recess, working hours from 6:30 a.m. to sunset, and payment of wages by the 15th of every month.

The recognition of Sunday as a weekly holiday marked one of the earliest labor welfare reforms in India and a significant milestone in the country's labor rights movement.
