Verrier Elwin

Verrier Elwin (Harry Verrier Holman Elwin) a British-Indian anthropologist, ethnologist, tribal activist.  Sahitya Akademi Award recipient. Vice-principal of Wycliffe Hall at Oxford. He came to India as a missionary. He was influenced over time by the ideologies of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. He left the priesthood to work with Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. He made the decision to settle among the Gonds in order to get more fully immersed in the labour, misery, and poverty of India.
