An exponent of the Banaras Gharana, popularly known as the “Queen of Thumri.”

One of the foremost exponents of Purab Ang Thumri, she played a major role in popularizing and preserving the genre.

Recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
