The first May Day in India was celebrated.
On 1 May 1923, M. Singaravelu Chettiar founded the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan in Madras (now Chennai), marking a landmark moment in India’s labour movement.
On the same day, he organized the first May Day meetings at Marina Beach and Triplicane Beach.
This marked the first time the red flag was used in India as a symbol of the labor movement.
Malayapuram Singaravelu Chettiar urged the British government to declare May 1 a national holiday and supported workers’ rights like the 8-hour workday.
Later, Babasaheb Ambedkar played a key role in legally establishing the 8-hour workday in India through labour reforms.
On 26 December 1925, during the Kanpur conference, the Communist Party of India was formed, and earlier labour organizations like the Labour Kisan Party declined as communist movements consolidated.
