India’s First Provincial Elections held across 11 Provinces of British India.


On 18 January 1937, India’s first provincial elections were held under the Government of India Act, 1935.

They were conducted across eleven provinces of British India.

The provinces included Madras, Bombay, Bengal, United Provinces, Punjab, Bihar, Central Provinces and Berar, Assam, Orissa, North-West Frontier Province, and Sindh.

The elections took place between 18 January and 20 February 1937.

They marked an important step toward provincial self-government in colonial India.
