India’s population officially reached the 1 billion mark.

On 11 May 2000, India officially marked crossing the 1 billion population milestone with the birth of a baby girl at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

The Government of India symbolically declared a baby girl named Aastha Arora as the country’s “billionth citizen”.

This milestone made India the second country in the world, after China, to reach a population of 1 billion.
