The Government of India officially designated Tamil as the country's first Classical Language.

On 6 June 2004, the Government of India announced its decision to recognize Tamil as a Classical Language.

This historic decision made Tamil the first Indian language to receive Classical Language status.

The announcement was made during the tenure of President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who strongly supported the recognition of Tamil as a Classical Language.
