India’s first successful nuclear weapon test ‘Operation Smiling Buddha’ was conducted.
On 18 May 1974, India conducted its first nuclear test at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan, codenamed “Smiling Buddha” (Pokhran-I).
The device was detonated underground and was officially described by the Government of India as a peaceful nuclear explosion.
The test demonstrated India’s nuclear technology capability and marked a major milestone in its strategic program.
