Gambia Revolution Day

Gambia Revolution Day was officially observed annually on 22 July in The Gambia.

It commemorated the 1994 military coup d'état, when a group of young military officers led by Yahya Jammeh overthrew the government of President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, bringing an end to nearly three decades of civilian rule.

The day marked a major turning point in Gambian political history. During Jammeh's presidency, it was celebrated with military parades, national ceremonies, cultural events, and patriotic activities.

Following Jammeh's departure from office in 2017, Revolution Day ceased to be an official national celebration under the new government. However, 22 July remains a historically significant date associated with the 1994 coup and its long-term political impact on The Gambia.

The date continues to be referenced in discussions on Gambian history, governance, democracy, military rule, political transition, and constitutional development.
