Gangetic Dolphin was declared India's National Aquatic Animal.

On 5th October 2009, The Ganges River Dolphin, also known as the Gangetic Dolphin or Susu, was declared India's national aquatic animal by the Government of India.

This decision was made during the first meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) on October 5, 2009, chaired by then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to highlight conservation efforts for the endangered species and the health of the Ganga River ecosystem.

The dolphin is a freshwater mammal endemic to the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna river systems in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, and serves as an indicator of river ecosystem health.
