India first celebrated Independence Day.
India first celebrated Independence Day on 26 January 1930, following the declaration of Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) by the Indian National Congress.
After the declaration, 26 January was unanimously chosen as Independence Day and was observed every year from 1930 to 1946 by Congress leaders, freedom fighters, and the general public.
After independence was fixed on 15 August 1947, the Congress decided to mark 26 January as Republic Day instead.
The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950, a date deliberately chosen to honour the legacy of the Purna Swaraj movement.
