INS Aridhaman was commissioned into the Indian Navy.
On 3 April 2026, INS Aridhaman was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam.
Its name, Aridhaman, translates to ‘Destroyer of Enemies’ in Sanskrit.
It is India’s third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).
On 23 November 2021, INS Aridhaman (S4) was launched (put into water for the first time after construction).
It strengthens India’s second-strike capability and supports continuous at-sea deterrence.
It has a displacement of about 7,000 tonnes and is powered by an 83 MW pressurized light-water reactor.
It can reach a submerged speed of up to 24 knots.
It is equipped with eight vertical launch tubes to carry nuclear missiles such as the K-4 or K-15.
It also has advanced sonar systems and anechoic tiles for improved stealth.
It was built at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam with support from Larsen & Toubro.
